Underneath the Hat

NIÑO OBENZA

Before the craft, there were experiences. Moments that shaped the way he sees the world — the details he notices, the patience he carries, the way his hands move when creating something from nothing.

For Niño, working with hats is not just about form. It's about feeling. About understanding that what you create will become part of someone else's life — their expression, their identity.

Every step, every challenge, every lesson has shaped not only the hats he creates, but the person behind them.

The Beginning

He was born and raised in the Philippines, where life was simple but full of rhythm. Music became his first language — playing in church, starting a band, and finding identity through sound. There was something in that rhythm that stayed with him. A sense of timing, of patience, of knowing when something felt right. Long before he worked with his hands, he had already learned how to feel his way through creation.

The Shift

Becoming a father meant making difficult choices. He moved to Thailand in search of opportunity, leaving behind what mattered most — not out of distance, but out of purpose. It was not an easy decision, and it was never meant to be. Some choices stay with you, no matter how far you go. From that point on, everything carried weight — and nothing was taken lightly.

A New Chapter

In Thailand, life changed again. That's where our paths crossed — and a new chapter began, shaped by two different worlds coming together. It wasn't planned, and it didn't follow a clear direction. But it felt real from the beginning. Something new started to take form — not just in life, but in the way forward.

Starting Over

Moving to Sweden meant starting from nothing. A new country, a new language, and no clear path forward — only the will to build something real. Everything familiar was left behind. Every step had to be relearned, rebuilt, and redefined. But in that uncertainty, there was also space — space to grow, and to become something new.

Finding the Craft

He had never seen himself as creative. But working with his hands changed something. What started with painting became a craft — a way to shape, refine, and create with purpose. There was a shift from thinking to doing. From trying to understanding. And slowly, something that had never existed before began to take form.

The work today

Today, every hat is shaped by hand — guided by instinct, patience, and a deep respect for the process. No shortcuts. No unnecessary steps. Just craftsmanship. Each piece carries time within it. Attention, repetition, and small adjustments that make all the difference. Nothing is rushed — because what is made is meant to last.
